A Dining Room Makeover – Part One

“Take time to do what makes your soul happy.” -Anonymous

One of the things that makes my soul happy is food. Another thing that makes food more delicious is eating it with sweet friends in beautiful spaces.

After we moved into our house we had the first time home buyer problem; empty rooms.

The dining room, there it sat. First, a place for boxes to be unpacked. Then, blank walls and a room with no furniture to fill it.

In February, I began my search for a dining room table and chairs on Craigslist. Craigslist, you might ask? Yes, it was my plan to purchase (for a reasonable price) a used dining room table, chairs and eventually a china cabinet to paint using Annie Sloan chalk paint.

I found a dining room table in the neighborhood where we live and went with my mother-in-law to go see it on one of my days off work.

After measuring and loving the table, I brought it home and did what any DIY-er would do. I began taking it apart!

Here is a before picture of the dining room table and chairs:

If you look closely you can even see the old fabric on the chair too.

I used Old White Annie Sloan chalk paint and gave it two coats because I wanted a smoother look.

Using sand paper I sanded some of the chair and legs of the table.

I finished it off with Annie Sloan soft wax to give the table and chairs a smooth finish.

I recovered the seats with fabric from JoAnn’s. I chose fabrics with cream, blue and bits of gray (of course!).

We are loving our dining room table and I cannot wait to share with you the china cabinet I just finished!
